We are bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act), including the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
The purposes why we collect, hold, use and disclose personal information
Primarily, we collect, hold, use and disclose your personal information and associated electricity meter data to market to provide you with our services, or for a purpose ancillary to this. This service helps you understand your energy use and how much energy you have saved or potentially could save, each year. If you qualify for Government incentives, we also need this information to help you calculate and benefit from incentives for those savings.
To carry out this purpose, we will also build statistical models to identify factors which may cause changes in your energy use before and after you implement an upgrade. We may also combine your anonymised data with other data sources made available from energy utilities, other customers, government agencies, commercial sources and the Bureau of Meteorology. However, we do this using your data which has been anonymised, de-identified and stripped of your personal information.
We also retain your de-identified and anonymised data to prove the same benefits to other customers, that we provide you using similar anonymised data, and to develop new products and services to meet the needs of our customers, to undertake projects and studies relating to energy efficiency, demand management, bill analysis and/or smart electricity grid activities.
The information we collect
Personal details
We collect and hold a range of personal information that is reasonably necessary for the purposes of supplying you with our services.
The kinds of personal information we collect include your name and contact information, including your address, email and telephone number.
We also collect information about the nature of your premises, including the address, whether you are using the premises for a residential or business purpose and the type of business you operate at the premises.
Metering data
In addition, we collect and store your National Meter Identifier (NMI) and your NMI address (which may be the same as your personal address). An NMI is an identification number that helps us to identify your particular meter.
We also collect current and historic metering data about the premises connected to our electricity network.
Metering data information is handled in accordance with the National Electricity Rules and the Market Operations Rules where they apply, as well as in accordance with the Privacy Act, where the Privacy Act applies.
No sensitive information
We do not collect sensitive information about you, such as details of your race, political beliefs, religion or health.
How do we collect the information?
We will generally collect personal information directly from you. For example, when you complete our online energy assessment or energy savings application forms.
We may also seek your explicit permission to collect the energy metering data for your home or business premise from your energy retailer or Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP), with your consent.
If you work for one of our service providers or business customers, we may need to obtain certain information from them, such as your contact details.
If we do not obtain the information requested, we may not be able to provide you with our services.
